Project Period
From 11/2010 To 7/2011
Objectives
Participants of the Project are expected to
  1. learn the whole-school approach to planning a school-based curriculum of Life Education;
  2. grasp the effective strategies and techniques for implementing Life Education to help students build positive values and attitudes;
  3. understand the effective methods for assessing the value of Life Education;
  4. participate in an exchange programme outside Hong Kong to learn how Life Education is developed and practiced in the region; and
  5. develop a school-based unit or activity on Life Education under the support and supervision of experts.
Methods Used

The Project involved of 3 developmental stages:

Stage 1: Professional Training Programme on Life Education, with 6 sessions of lectures and workshops

Stage 2: Study Tour on Life Education held in Taiwan from February 24 to 27, 2010

Stage 3, composed of 4 parts:

  1. Proposal of experiential designs of a school-based Life Education unit or activity by the partner schools
  2. At least 3 visits by Project experts to each school to conduct planning meetings with the partner teachers
  3. A Seminar and Group Sharing Session held on April 9, 2011 to better consolidate the experiential designs of each school after in-depth sharing and learning from one another
  4. A concluding seminar of the Project held on June 25, 2011 that featured an exhibit of the experiential designs of all partner schools as well as presentations of projects by the partner teachers from 3 schools.
Summary of Findings and Impacts
The impacts of the Project have 3 major aspects:
  1. 20 partner schools, along with their principals and 97 teachers, joined the project, which comprised a combined total of 4,100 hours of training, study visits, seminars and consultation sessions (35 hours per head in average). In sum, the activities of the project brought about a significant impact to the partner schools. All the partner schools expressed their decision to improve and implement their experiential designs of a Life Education unit or activity in the new school year after completion of the project, their intention to develop further Life Education units or activities based on what they had learnt in this project.

  2. In a survey conducted on the different partner schools in October 2011, the school year following completion of the project, 15 out of 17 school respondents (88%) expressed interest in adopting the whole-school approach to planning of Life Education after their participation in the programme. These schools listed Life Education as a major item in their school development plan. 5 schools (30%) told us that for the purpose of school-based development of Life Education, they submitted applications from public money or school-sponsoring organization of staff development on Life Education, including Study Tours to Taiwan.

  3. The Project was found to have built a strong network of expertise among partner schools. Organizers of the Project invited academics and experts on Life Education to act as consultations and frontline experts. Instructors with outstanding background in Life Education were likewise invited to share their experiences on the subject. The Taiwan Study Tour group built alliances with scholars, institutions, schools and organizations that played important roles in developing and implementing Life Education in Taiwan.
